FitBit: solving setup "Operation Aborted"

I purchased a FitBit One a few months ago without understanding that it requires Windows XP or newer; no GNU/Linux support.  Uncool in 2013.

I dug up an unused EeePC with a WinXP license on it and tried to install the FitBit syncing software; the software would install but I couldn't connect to the FitBit One device.  I wish I had a screenshot, but the messages were:

Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\e031ec-389e-4519-a88d-821a82974bcc.html.

"Operation Aborted"

There are various posts about this on the FitBit.com/forums website but no one had solutions, including the FitBit staff.

After a few months of fighting with this XP install on the 4GB hard drive, I was able to delete enough Windows files and backups and temp files to install Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 8.

IE8 was the thing that did the trick, although that required XPsp3.

It's unfortunate that the FitBit website nowhere mentions IE8 as a minimum; it's more unfortunate that they don't support Linux (perhaps via Wine for a common API with Windows?) or offer a tiny, Linux-based syncing station.  Seriously, that would be so easy and inexpensive to build.
